Navigating university campus can be a stressful and cumbersome experience
This task becomes easier when you are familiar with the school layout, but tons of visitors and new students come in at any time and end up getting lost or spending a lot of time navigating.
In a rush or a pinch, it’s hard to not to get anxious about reaching your destination in time.

Existing navigation solutions are not suited to the problem
Although Google Maps helps navigate between buildings, there isn’t much more than signage to help you get you to the places you want to go.
Moreover, UCalgary’s interactive map tool is limited in interaction, as it only gives PDF floor plans and aerial views of outdoor buildings.

Following a path that guides you at every step, and adapts to any detours.
Taking inspiration from open world games such as Genshin Impact, I imagined an ideal solution would resemble a path that you are able to view and follow at every turn.
This path would dynamically adapt to where you are, and wherever you move to get you to your destination.

I created and sent out a survey to validate my ideas
I figured that user interviews, for instance, might not be needed as I was looking for a greater volume of responses to verify my thoughts; thus, I sent out a survey.
I received 17 responses from 13 first and second year students, and 4 responses from upper years.

Navigating indoors only is more challenging
On a campus that sometimes sees temperatures under -20C for a month at a time, students are more inclined to follow friends for indoor routes.

An interaction I had with lost exchange students on campus made me realize they were struggling because existing tools were ill-suited to those who didn’t already recognize each building or know each building’s name.

From a technical standpoint, the ideal solution seemed difficult to implement.
I needed to think of a solution that would suffice given the vast limitations posed to existing indoor navigation techniques.
I kept brainstorming for more options, asking for advice from engineers along the way.
